Some areas of Vila Nova de Cervera have buildings that date back to the 14th - 16th centuries. King Dinis ordered the Castle built in the 14th Century to promote settlement in the area and to guard the frontier. King Dinis reigned from 1261 - 1325 and was one of the most important monarchs of the time establishing Portugal's borders.
